The Surrogate Mother

Abby is determined not to be late for Monica’s ultrasound. She is briefly delayed by Denise, who states that Abby has failed to reply to several emails from the Cuddles marketing team. Abby is surprised at her oversight but promises to fix it as soon as she returns to work.

Abby gets to the hospital before the appointment time of two o’clock, only to find Monica and Sam emerging from the ultrasound room. Sam and Monica tell Abby that the appointment was at one o’clock. Abby’s calendar confirms her mistake. When Abby asks if she can have the photo of the baby, Monica says that the original is hers but that Abby can have a copy. The receptionist congratulates Monica and Sam, mistaking them for husband and wife. Monica does not correct the misconception, and Sam does not appear to hear. Abby notes that Monica is again wearing red lipstick and a low-cut blouse.

When Monica suggests coffee, Abby and Sam say that they must return to work. However, Sam demurs when Monica expresses fascination with his current research project.

Abby tells Shelley about her concerns regarding Monica and Sam. Shelley points out that Monica looks like Abby and that Sam is likely to be emotionally influenced by Monica’s pregnancy with his child.
